Vertical Dumbbell Rack

The main advantage of a vertical dumbbell rack is that it takes up a lot less floor space than a horizontal rack. Because it has a relatively small footprint, it can fit into a fairly small gym, giving more room for floor space and other equipment. If you only have a very small space to work out, or you really like having as much floor space available as possible, a vertical dumbbell rack is a great option.  A vertical rack really is a very space efficient storage solution, and the height of it means that taking and placing dumbbells operates at a height that is natural for a person, limiting the amount that you need to bend over.

However vertical racks don't tend to be able to support as much weight as horizontal racks, as they have a higher centre of gravity and can topple over more easily. If you are looking for a rack to store really heavy dumbbells, then a vertical rack might not be the best option. Vertical dumbbell racks don't tend to have as much capacity as well as horizontal racks, purely because they are limited by their height. However if you just have a few fairly light dumbbells then a vertical rack is a really good option. If you do buy a vertical dumbbell rack, then it is probably a good idea to place it near a wall or pillar so that it is less likely to fall over if it gets knocked. Another suggestion is to ensure that you place the heaviest dumbbells near the bottom of the rock, so that it is as stable as possible and least likely to topple over.

When looking for a vertical dumbbell rack one of the most important things to check is that it fits the type of dumbbells that you own. There are a fair range of dumbbells available, all in different shapes, sizes and styles. It is well worth measuring the dimensions of your dumbbells and checking with the manufacturer that they will fit the product that you interested in. Otherwise you risk buying a rack that your dumbbells simply don't fit into, which would probably mean that you have to send it back to the manufacturer and start all over again.

If you quite like the idea of a vertical dumbbell rack, but think that your dumbbells are probably too heavy for it, then it might be worth considering buying a vertical rack in addition to a horizontal one. If you have both, you can keep the heavy dumbbells that you use for exercises like dumbbell press and shoulder press separate from lighter dumbbells that you would use for exercises like bicep curls. Having your weights separate can help you keep your gym tidy and organised, which is a big plus especially if you have a relatively small area to exercise in.

In summary, a vertical dumbbell rack is a great space saver, but you should check that it is suitable for holding the type of dumbbells that you own.
