Hex Dumbbell Rack
A hex dumbbell rack is especially designed for hex
dumbbells. Hex dumbbells themselves are on the most popular types of dumbbells so there is a good range of racks
that are especially designed for them. As the name suggests, hex dumbbells are made into a hexagon shape, which
stops them from rolling around on a floor or dumbbell rack. They are also very often coated in rubber, which again
helps them grip a surface and stops them rolling about on a gym floor. There are some implications of this design
that affect how a hex dumbbell rack is designed.
In a normal horizontal rack, rubber 'saddles' are
often put in place to stop traditional dumbbells from rolling. However as hex dumbbells are shaped so that they don't roll and
already have a rubber coating so these saddles are not necessary. Instead a hex dumbbell rack tends
to be a rather plain affair, either using a simple 'L' shape to keep
the dumbbells in place or using a pair of parallel rails.

Above is a rather poor diagram I made to
show you how a simple 'L' shape hex dumbbell rack works. The blue represents the rack, I just coloured it that way
for illustration purposes. This side on view shows that there is no need for
anything to be used to stop the dumbbells rolling as they have a flat surface and rubber coating. Although the
diagram does not show it, many pairs of dumbbells could be stored in row next to this one in the same
arrangement.
The diagram below illustrates how
a rack uses parallel rails instead of a simple L shape.

Both designs make use of the flat
surfaces of hex dumbbells and they both work very well. It makes sense to use such simple designs, as there really
is no need to over complicate it. In a simple design there is generally less to go wrong which is a big plus when
you just want a functional dumbbell rack.
If you are looking for a hex dumbbell
rack, then the first thing to do is to find design that you like, that suits the quantity and weight of
dumbbells that you need to hold. Obviously not all hex dumbbell racks will be suitable if you only have a few
dumbbells to store. The next step is to ensure that it fits your type of dumbbells. You shouldn't really have any
problems on this front with a hex dumbbell rack as they normally a standard size, but it makes sense to make sure
that they will fit properly.
