Dumbbell Rack
If you are looking to buy a
dumbbell rack, then there are lot of variables to
consider before making a decision, first of all lets consider the reasons
for buying a dumbbell rack.
The most obvious reason for a rack is to keep all of
your dumbbells in order. If you have a large array of dumbbells, then you will know how messy and disorganised they
can become. As well as looking untidy, having heavy weights lying around a gym floor can potentially be dangerous
as they could cause you to trip and fall. Another reason to have a dumbbell rack is so that you can quickly access the dumbbell that you want. If you are doing a set where you need a greater or lesser weight than the
set before then you need to be able to find the correct dumbbell quickly
so that you don't lose the intensity of the workout.
If you think you need a dumbbell rack, there are a
lot of factors to consider before buying one. The most apparent thing to consider is how many dumbbells you rack
needs to store. Some people will simply own a pair of adjustable dumbbells, so
they need a rack with only two spaces. At the other end of the scale would be the requirement that a commercial gym
has, where it may need to hold twenty or more pairs of dumbbells. In
between these two extremes, the needs of the individual who doesn't have
adjustable dumbbells will be catered for, with many dumbbell racks
focussing on holding around 5 or so pairs.
The next consideration to think about is the combined
weight of dumbbells that you intend to store on the rack. This is very
important because you need to buy a rack that is strong enough to support all of your dumbbells safely. If you
don't consider this aspect then there is a chance that your dumbbell rack will become bent out of shape or even
collapse. If you only have a pair of adjustable dumbbells then your bench
might only need to support 100 pounds or so, but a commercial gym that needs to hold twenty pairs of
dumbbells might need to support a weight as heavy as 2000 pounds. The
best way to go about working out how strong your dumbbell rack needs to be is to add up the weight of all of
your dumbbells, and check with the rack manufacturer that it is able to support that weight. It would probably be a
good idea to do your maths on the cautious side, just to make sure that the rack you buy is more than strong enough
to hold all of your dumbbells. For example if your dumbbells weighed 400
pounds, you might want to buy a rack that is safe to hold 500 or 600 pounds so that you know it is plenty strong
enough. This is also a good idea if you plan to buy more dumbbells in the future as you wont need to buy a new rack
each time you do.
The next thing to consider is the design of
dumbbell rack that you want. There is a fair range of designs, but they
basically break down into two main types- vertical and horizontal dumbbell racks. Which design you choose depends on your personal preference and how much space you
have. If you have plenty of space in your gym then having a horizontal rack is a good option, but if space is
restricted then a vertical rack might make more sense. It is always a good idea to shop around, and if you need a
really strong rack but simply can't afford one then it is worth considering a second hand dumbbell rack as they
tend to be much cheaper. As well as they style of the rack itself, it is imperative to check that the rack is
suitable for the type of dumbbells that you have. Dumbbells vary in size and style, so it is really important to
ensure you get a rack that fits your dumbbells.
The last main area to consider is how much you are
prepared to spend. The cost of a dumbbell rack can vary
enormously, from just $30 or $40 to hundreds or even
thousands of dollars. The cost will depend to an extent on how much
weight it needs to hold, as a dumbbell rack that needs to hold a lot of weight has to be well built and so will
cost a fair bit.
